Game number four from GameDev.tv's UE5 C++ Developer course is a reasonably simple one in terms of gameplay. The player takes control of a little tank with the task of defeating some turrets set in the world. In terms of the gameplay, I did not take many liberties here, so people who have gone through the course will notice it is more or less what the instructor ended up with. Instead, I focused my attention on learning the C++ features and got creative in my implementation. That said, I will do my best to present this project in an interesting way. I hope you enjoy!
Meet Terry the Tank. Terry has been selected to clear out a small nest of turrets under control by Overlord Oliver to help keep his village safe. Terry is a nimble little tank, and he is very excited to prove himself.
Let's do this!
Terry drives up to the nest, encountering the first turret. He tries to dodge its attacks but is struck a heavy blow.
Dang... he is good.
Terry manages to destroy the first turret. Knowing now he under-estimated these enemies, he takes the next one with more caution.
As Terry destroys the second turret without incident, he feels his confidence coming back. He quickily moves onto the third. It is a fierce battle, but Terry makes a grave error. He is struck a final blow, and he explodes.
With Terry gone, the enemy recovers. But they do not yet know what Terry's destruction means; for Terry had a twin sister.
Tanisha is Terry's twin sister, although having technically been built second is largely considered to be the "younger" one. This combined with her gender has constantly led to her combat skill being under-estimated. Terry's death weighs heavy on her.
If only the other tanks would have listened! If only they would have sent her instead! She would have gladly took on the dangerous task in order to ensure the safety of the village - of her brother. But now, it is too late. Terry is gone, and all Tanisha can think about is revenge.
Tanisha bolts towards the nest. In a fury of missles and an act of combat expertise, she eliminates the nest without taking a single hit.
She returns to the village a hero. Never again will she be under-estimated, and now she can freely protect her village from any threats Overlord Oliver sends their way. The cost of this, however, was great. Tanisha will never forget her older brother and his bravery. Every time she enters battle is a reminder of what she has lost, and a reminder of what she is fighting for. No one should have to experience this pain, and she will do her best to ensure no one in her village has to.
What an emotional journey. I hope you enjoyed Tanisha's story - I was unsure for a while what to do for this showcase, but I am happy with the result. I hope you enjoyed it, too. There is one section left in this course, so if you have enjoyed these so far keep an eye out for that one!
